Art That Blows?

How could Art That Blows possibly be a good thing?  Trust us, it is.  The only thing about it that blows is possibly a few of the brass instruments that have been made into fabulous art to benefit Band of Angels.  Art That Blows is the summer fundraiser for Band of Angels that takes place the second Friday in June every year.

As we’ve mentioned before, Band of Angels is an amazing Kansas City non-profit who collect neglected instruments from the public, clean them up and give them to kids in need who wish to participate in band and orchestra programs.  Some of the donated instruments are beyond repair.  It is these instruments that artists from all over Kansas City use to make stunning pieces to be auctioned off at Art That Blows.  Lamps, sculptures, fountains, jewelry, wall art and much much more is available.

This year we will be donating 30 pieces of jewelry that will be auctioned off.  We are already working on our pieces and thought we’d give you a sneak peek.

Any guesses as to what instruments were used in each piece?  We’d love to hear your guesses.  Just reply to this blog to join in the fun.  If you’d like to use our website as a cheat sheet click here and cruise our Band of Angels Collection.

If you are in the Kansas City area we’d love to see you at Art That Blows this year on Friday June 9th.  If you’d like to see some of the artwork from last years auction click here.  If you have an instrument that is gathering dust at your house you can donate it at any Meyer Music location.

Have a wonderful week!

Musical Instrument Make-Over

Who doesn’t love a make-over?  Who doesn’t love programs that help kids in need?  No one that we’ve ever met!  We’re going to have some fun by spending the next few blog posts showing you how a musical instrument can have a dramatic make-over into a piece of jewelry so that kids in need can go to music camp.

The gorgeous clarinet and flute in the photo above were donated to Band of Angels but were not repairable.  They came to us so that they could continue to give by becoming wearable art.

Check out what became of the gorgeous metal clarinet resting underneath the flute in the photograph above:

Many of these pieces can still be found on our website.  Click here to visit the Clarinet section of our Band of Angels Collection.

This is what that beautiful silver flute looks like now:

If you would like to see what flute pieces we have available on our website click here.  We are always adding new creations to our website so check back often.  If you have an idea of a design you like please email us at info@hangupsjewelry.com.  We love creating custom orders!

A generous percentage of the sale of every piece from our Band of Angels Collection goes directly to Band of Angels programs. To learn more you can visit Band of Angels by clicking here.  We feel so fortunate to partner with this amazing non-profit that has so much heart.  Last weekend we attended their annual Heartstrings Gala where we were thrilled to see young musician and long-time Band of Angels trumpet recipient, Destiny, be given the gift of a brand new Bach Stradivarius trumpet from Conn-Selmer Inc.  We had so much fun meeting and listening to saxophonist Ryan Kilgore who spends his time performing solo as well as with Stevie Wonder.  Check out Ryan wearing his Hang Ups Saxophone Key Cufflinks in the photo in the bottom photo!  It was so fun and inspiring to hear Destiny’s story and to watch her perform with Ryan Kilgore and local Kansas City Band Right On Red.

Band Of Angels guest of honor Destiny, Band of Angels Angel Alyssa, Kristi, Carolyn and Board Member Deann.

Have a wonderful week friends!  Watch for our next blog featuring a Trombone make-over in 2 weeks.

Hello June! What’s Up?

hello-june-we-heart-it-5

June is a busy month with so much to be excited about!  We start the month with a bang, on June 4th, by going to see the Canadian band Barenaked Ladies at Starlight Theater.  It’s a family event for us:  Carolyn’s whole family are going along with Kristi and her youngest daughter Mary Alice.  It’s the kids first concert and they are all very excited.  If you have a chance to grab last minute tickets we highly recommend it.  This band is very fun, creative and happy.

The following Friday, June 10th, Kristi & I will attend Art That Blows, an event that benefits Band of Angels KC.   Local artists have repurposed and donated non-functional musical instruments into pieces of art for this event. Guests may bid on the pieces during the silent auction starting at 5pm and then enjoy a live rooftop performance by DJ Ashton Martin while overlooking the breathtaking Kansas City skyline. Tickets are still available.  You can learn more and purchase tickets by clicking here.  Kristi and I have donated a whopping 40 pieces of jewelry made from retired instruments to this event.  We are excited to meet the other artists who will be in attendance as well as Band of Angels supporters.

On Friday June 17th and Saturday June 18th (from 5pm-11pm each evening) Kristi and I will be hanging out in our booth (with all of our Hang Ups) at SoJo Summerfest (formerly Jazz in the Woods).  Check out this fun festival for local food & brews, local music and to meet local artisans to support local charities.  Does it get any better than that?  This event takes place at Corporate Woods, Overland Park KS and is a free event so come by and see us!

Last but definitely not least, Sunday June 19th is Father’s Day!  Like so many other people out there we are desperately trying to think of unique and fun gifts for our Dad’s and our husbands.  If your husband or father is a musician we have plenty of options for you on our website.   For example, this money clip features a key from a retired trumpet.  A generous portion of the proceeds go directly to Band of Angels KC and will help to send kids to music camp.  There’s nothing better than a gift that gives back.

That’s what we have going on this June.  We’d love it if you could come out and say hi to us at any of these events.  We wish you all a safe and happy June!
